Discounts for owners
If you are the owner of one of the following types of property you will be responsible for paying Council Tax:
- Mental nursing home
- Residential care home
- Nursing home
- Bail hostel
- Probation hostel
- Hostel
- Night shelter (see conditions)
Any residents who are receiving care and treatment will not be counted when calculating the number of adults. This means that the owner may be entitled to a discount of either 25 or 50%, depending on how many adults are left to be counted.
Exemption
People who are receiving care outside of the home for one of the following reasons may be entitled to claim an exemption if the home they have left is empty:
- Old age
- Physical or mental disability
- Past or present alcohol dependency
- Past or present drug dependency
- Past or present mental illness.
If you want to apply for a discount or exemption for a property in Fareham, email: counciltax@fareham.gov.uk. We will require evidence of your entitlement.
You must inform the Council if you are no longer entitled to a discount or exemption. We will take legal action against anyone who fraudulently claims a discount or exemption.
Conditions
Conditions that apply to disregarding (not counting) residents of a night shelter
To qualify as a night shelter the premises must not include self contained accommodation, and must be:
- Provided for people of no fixed abode and no settled way of life
- Occupied under licences, which are not tenancies.
