Town Centre Regeneration CATS

Town Centre Podium and West Street

We are developing options for the regeneration of the town centre. This page provides feedback from Let's Talk Fareham Town Centre public engagement meetings.

You can find out more about the town centre regeneration and get the latest updates by visiting the dedicated Town Centre Regeneration webpage.

March 2024

Two meetings took place on the topic of Town Centre Regeneration in March 2024:

You can view the Presentation PDF (8 MB) provided at both meetings.

FAQs

The following were common questions and answers at the two meetings:

What are you going to do that is different to get people into the Town Centre?

We have many ideas to improve the Town Centre. You can view the presentation of our vision for the Town Centre Regeneration here PDF (8 MB)

Will there be provision for community groups at Fareham Live?

Yes, the operators of Fareham Live, Trafalgar Theatres are keen to work with local groups. You can find out more about Fareham Live Facilities here .

Can there be better pedestrian access to Bath Lane?

We will work with Hampshire County Council to look at options for a more considered approach to pedestrian access in this area.

What public transport links will be available in the town Centre in the evenings after 6pm?

Fareham Borough Council does not control the public transport services. The Town Centre is well served in the day but it's a challenge in the evening. We will try as we develop an evening economy to talk to bus companies about trialling services but can't force them.

What Parking will be available within the Town Centre?

Once the new Fareham Live car park is open in time for the opening of the new venue there will be around 1,400 spaces in the town centre. Details of all the car parks in Fareham town centre can be found here

How many Disabled and Mother/child parking spaces are going to be available?

We are committed to ensuring that all Fareham residents have access to quality parking in the Town Centre and will continue to meet our disabled space provision requirements.

While we do have a small number of parent and child spaces available in the Fareham Shopping Centre Multi Storey Car Park, this is not something the Council is able to legally enforce. Therefore, we have made the decision to prioritise providing more accessible, spacious bays that can be used by everyone.

Could we have free parking to try and get people into the Town Centre?

We could perhaps explore parking incentives for periods where the town centre is particularly empty. This would be a way to test the impact reduced charges would have.

Indoor Food markets and independent shopping is popular elsewhere. Can this be incorporated into the Town Centre?

We do have a lot of independent stores on West Street but agree on food hall ideas. They are generally more successful when located in buildings with character. Older buildings such as 66 West Street could lend themselves to this sort of offer and we will try to work with their owners to explore this.

What are the plans for the Shopping Centre?

We bought the shopping centre last September and are currently looking at a number of options. We know it should be quite profitable for at least 5 years. As leases come up for renewal over the next few years, we could look to move them into one half of the shopping centre.  This would then provide space for residential development such as flats that would help bring more people into the town centre.

Will you think about people with disabilities when designing public spaces?

Yes, we want the town centre to be accessible to everyone.
