Press Release

A boost for first time buyers in Fareham

Fareham Borough Council has welcomed the announcement by Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) that thousands of new starter homes are to be built across the country this year.

They will be built exclusively for first-time buyers aged 23-40 and available for at least 20 per cent below market value.

Fareham Borough Council is one of 30 local authorities selected to work with the Homes and Communities Agency to deliver a share of these homes. A number of brownfield sites in the Borough are being looked at as possible locations for them, including Fareham Town Centre and Portchester District Centre, together with any early phases of Welborne Garden Village. Further brownfield sites across the Borough will also be looked at to assess their suitability for new builds under this project.

Executive Leader of Fareham Borough Council, Cllr Seán Woodward, said: "I'm delighted that Fareham has been chosen as of one of the first areas to deliver these much needed new starter homes. Not only will these new homes help first time buyers get onto the housing ladder, they will also support the wider growth and regeneration of the Borough."

Housing Minister Gavin Barwell said: "This government is committed to building starter homes to help young first time buyers get on the housing ladder. This first wave of partnerships shows the strong local interest to build thousands of starter homes on hundreds of brownfield sites in the coming years. One in three councils has expressed an interest to work with us so far."

The new starter homes will draw funds from the Government's £1.2 billion Starter Homes Land Fund and it's hoped they'll be delivered by 2020.
