Hill Head seawall defence gets approval

Fareham Borough Council has secured the long term future of the sea defences at Hill Head by approving the construction of a new half-a-million pound seawall at a meeting of the Council's Executive last night.   

The replacement seawall will reduce the risk of flooding, protect beach huts and keep the promenade open all year round.  It will also reduce the potential for coastal erosion on the cliffs behind the beach huts.

The Council's coastal engineers at the Eastern Solent Coastal Partnership (ESCP) will oversee  the project. The co-ordinated approach to coastal defence and beach maintenance in Hill Head has received considerable support from local residents.      

Home to a badger set and overwintering birds, the legal restrictions imposed on the site mean that the work can only take place between July and September.  During this time, this part of the promenade will be closed and diversion routes will be set up around the site. Some beach huts will not be accessible during this time. The Council has agreed to a rent reduction for those affected during the period the beach huts can't be used. 

As Executive Member for Planning and Development at Fareham Borough Council, Councillor Keith Evans said 'Building the seawall will allow residents, visitors and beach hut owners to safely carry on enjoying the promenade for years to come.'

A planning application for the replacement seawall has been submitted and if the plans are approved the works will start in early July.
