IFA2 Project Moves Closer to Delivery

Recommendations enabling National Grid's IFA2 development to proceed to construction stage were agreed at last night's Executive Meeting of Fareham Borough Council.   The agreement allows National Grid to lease the land required for the project and was a very important milestone in determining whether the project can proceed.  It is quite separate from the planning permission issued earlier this year.

The Council's Executive made the decision following the completion of extensive technical work to demonstrate how the interconnector can safely coexist at Daedalus with an operational airport and surrounding business parks.  The work was carried out over the course of 2017 and comprised a range of independent technical assessments and tests designed to provide all parties with confidence that there would be no adverse impact on current and future operations.  The tests included live trials at Solent Airport with aircraft taxiing over live buried cable, replicating the circumstances proposed for IFA2.  The results of this test demonstrated the cables meet the conditions set on the planning permission and there were no adverse impacts on aircraft systems that cannot be mitigated.

Four recommendations were put forward which, together, allow the project to proceed, subject to legally binding amendments being put in place.  These amendments will provide ongoing safeguards to the Council both during and following the construction stage, to ensure there are no surprises once build is complete.

Leader of Fareham Borough Council, Cllr Seán Woodward says: "Whilst we are satisfied with the result of the tests, I think adding in an additional requirement to ensure everything is as expected once IFA2 is up and running is crucial.  I am pleased that we will have this as a legal requirement as it will provide the Council and residents with an extra layer of confidence."

Undertaken by Arcadis, the detail of the technical work and findings have been published in three parts: the interim safety justification report; hazard log and technical assessment.

The report to the Executive and Arcadis reports may be viewed in full on the council's website: www.fareham.gov.uk then 'M' for meetings and find 'Executive' under committees.  The reports will also be listed under 'IFA2' and on National Grid's website.
