Fareham's architecture

During the 18th century the population of the area gradually increased and a drastic rebuilding programme became necessary. Many older, more squalid homes were pulled down and replaced by some of the fine stately buildings for which Georgians are renowned. Many have survived and there are several fine examples of Georgian architecture in Fareham's High Street. The author William Thackeray spent many school holidays here visiting his grandmother in a house in High Street and visited his aunt who lived in West Street.
