Silverfish (Lepisma Sacharina)

Size and colour

Silverfish are 12 mm long and silver.

Occurrence

They are found in moist conditions in kitchens, larders, bathrooms and basements. You might find them among books and behind skirting boards and loose wallpaper. If they are disturbed, they move very quickly in darting movements.

Habits

They lay eggs in cracks and crevices. The time taken for egg to reach adulthood varies from a few months to more than a year depending on how high the temperature is.

Food

Silverfish feed on scraps of carbohydrates, such as bread, cake, potatoes etc.

Control

Treat affected areas with an aerosol formulated to control crawling insects.
