West Street Shopping Precinct Portchester (Completed 1999)

The objective of this scheme was to create a more pleasant environment for shoppers in this busy shopping precinct.

The original pedestrian scheme was becoming worn out, and new seating and paving was required. The mature trees from the original scheme were retained as focal points for oak circular seats and raised platforms were created to avoid disturbing tree roots. Red brick paving was selected to introduce a central strip of colour into the surrounding grey paving but funds were insufficient to re-surface the entire precinct. Raised timber plant containers were introduced to provide enclosure to the pedestrian area at the eastern end and to screen road traffic on the adjacent busy roundabout. This allowed the provision of seating on the pedestrian side of the containers backed by colourful shrub and tree planting. A redundant section of road at the east end was taken into the pedestrian precinct.
