Keeping safe

The Borough is a safe place to live, work and visit. However, we know that your personal safety is of concern to you so here are some things that can help:

At home

• When you answer the door use a door viewer to check the caller's identity and keep a door chain fitted.
• Never let strangers into your home.
• Always check the identity of officials calling at your door and if in doubt telephone the agency concerned to confirm before you let them in.
• If you have any concerns about callers don't be afraid to call the police.

When out walking

• Keep to main and well-lit paths when you are out at night.
• Don't accept lifts from strangers.
• Where possible walk with a friend.
• Walk facing oncoming traffic.
• Let relatives/friends know where you're going and when you will return.
• Carry a personal attack alarm.
• If you feel threatened find a safe place, such as a shop or other public place, and telephone the police.

In the car

• Keep the car in good order and with enough petrol in it.
• Plan your route so you don't need to ask strangers for directions.
• Let relatives/friends know where you are going and your time of return.
• Keep bags and property out of sight in the car - don't drive with handbags or other property on the front seat.
• Don't give lifts to strangers.
• Carry a torch and coins for the telephone in case of emergencies.
