Reinvigorating the Village Centre
Adapting to change
Footfall is declining in the Portchester in the face of competition from out of town retailing and the internet. We need to address this.
New shops, businesses and housing can all generate increased investment and further improvements to the appearance of buildings. Development can also help in meeting the need for new housing in Portchester.
Our Proposals
We want to encourage both private and public landowners to improve the look and vibrancy of the precinct:
- Vacant shops could convert to homes if well designed
- New planning policies to encourage alternative commercial, leisure or community uses
Redevelopment opportunities
We can provide up to 20 new modern sized parking spaces by making a few changes. This would release the area at the back of the Co-op store for potential redevelopment. This might be some commercial space with flats above.
Feedback from the community is that the public toilet, bottle bank and bin area is a priority, and we are looking to address this.
